Impact

Discover some of the partner projects we support through our journeys.

We are committed to delivering on a 2030 nature-positive, climate-resilient ambition through our mission-led approach to travel.  We are advancing on this journey thanks to our community who travel with us, so we believe it is important to provide transparency over what these donations support.

Our Impact Pledge is our commitment to support the advancement of pioneering conservation projects through direct donations with every journey.

In 2023, and our second calendar year, we raised and directed over $50,000 to grassroot conversation projects.

OUR IMPACT PROJECTS

Tompkins Conservation

Tompkins Conservation was co-founded by Doug Tompkins, founder of The North Face and Esprit, and Kristine McDivitt Tompkins, long-time CEO of Patagonia. For three decades, the organisation has been committed to working on the ground in the Southern Cone of South America to confront the twin crises facing life on Earth: climate chaos and mass extinction. From northern Argentina to southern Chile, they are preserving land and sea, restoring biodiversity, and helping communities to thrive. Beyond creating national parks and rewilding, Tompkins Conservation has spearheaded environmental campaigns, supported activism, engaged in regenerative agriculture, and published books on environmental topics.

The Island-Ocean Connection Challenge

Today, our interconnected oceans and islands are in great peril. Climate change, ocean degradation, invasive species and biodiversity loss are causing entire land-sea ecosystems to collapse, and island communities are disproportionately impacted.

In Spring 2022, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Island Conservation, and Re:wild launched the Island-Ocean Connection Challenge where, by 2030, they aim to restore at least 40 globally significant island-ocean ecosystems from ridge to reef to benefit people, wildlife and our planet.

The European Nature Trust

Alladale Wilderness Reserve is a love-letter to the Scottish highlands, acquired by it’s custodian Paul Lister, Director of The European Nature Trust. The vision is to create a healthier, more balanced and self-sustaining ecosystem reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands before over-grazing and deforestation.

On Alladale’s journey so far, a million trees have been planted, damaged peatlands have been repaired, the native red squirrel has been successfully reintroduced, a Scottish Wildcat breeding centre has been established, and the reserve has become a base for reconnection and learning for school children across Scotland.

Samara Karoo Reserve

Once a thriving, biodiverse ecosystem of grasslands, South Africa’s Great Karoo sadly lost most of its wildlife to farming, fences and firearms. In 1997, Joburg-born Sarah and husband Mark Tompkins began their mission to restore the land to its former glory and founded a private game reserve, Samara Karoo. The Tompkins have since regenerated 67,000 acres of wilderness, and engaged in an ambitious programme of animal reintroduction, including the first wild cheetah back in the region in 125 years, the first elephants in over a century and, most recently, the first lions in 180 years.

OUR FOCUS - THE IBERÁ NATIONAL PARK:

This extraordinary wetland, the largest in Argentina, is home to 30% of the biodiversity in the country including endangered species such as the pampas and marsh deer, the maned wolf and grassland birds like the strange-tailed tyrant.

In 2005, what was to become one of the largest rewilding programs in the Americas was started, with the goal of restoring keystone species that had been extirpated from Iberá through hunting and habitat loss and were extinct in the region, the Province or, in some cases, the country.

As the rewilding program developed, the cultural identity of Iberá began to recover alongside the ecosystems and natural processes, impacting a total population of 100,000 people who surround the park.

Today, Iberá stands as one of the world’s most successful ongoing conservation missions.
