The Spirit of Sri Lanka

From Ancient Kingdoms to Wild Coastlines and Misty Tea Country

Journey Overview

Sri Lanka rewards those who take the time to look beyond the obvious. Over 16 nights, this journey travels across an island where wildlife, ancient history, local traditions and extraordinary landscapes are woven closely together.

Begin among the tropical landscapes of the west before heading into Wilpattu National Park, where quiet lakes, forest and open grassland create a setting for some of Sri Lanka’s most compelling wildlife encounters. From here, continue into the Cultural Triangle, exploring the remains of ancient kingdoms and gaining a sense of the civilisation that has shaped the island for centuries.

The journey then shifts towards the east coast, where days beside the Indian Ocean bring a welcome change of pace. Continue into the highlands, travelling through tea country and cooler mountain landscapes before reaching the south.

Along the way, there is time not only to see Sri Lanka but to meet the people who give the island its character. Local guides, craftspeople, tea growers and community initiatives reveal a side of the country that cannot be captured through its landmarks alone.

Finish in Galle, where the journey comes together amid the atmospheric streets of the historic fort. It is a final taste of Sri Lanka’s layered identity: Indian Ocean culture, colonial history, contemporary creativity and the enduring traditions of an island with many stories to tell.

Destinations and Landscapes

The journey begins near Colombo, where tropical waterways and palm-lined coastline set an unhurried pace, before heading north into Wilpattu, one of Sri Lanka’s largest and least-visited wildernesses. From there, the Cultural Triangle reveals itself: ancient ruins, ancient stone cities and rural farmland sit close beside the daily lives of wild elephants, monkeys and leopards, offering a landscape as rich in wildlife as it is in history.

Beyond the Cultural Triangle, the island unfolds further still. Quiet coastal villages give way to the warm waters and coral gardens of the eastern shoreline, before the road climbs into the misty tea estates and cool highland air of the central hills. The journey ends among the colonial streets and southern light of Galle, on Sri Lanka’s storied coast.

OUR FOCUS - THE IBERÁ NATIONAL PARK:

This extraordinary wetland, the largest in Argentina, is home to 30% of the biodiversity in the country including endangered species such as the pampas and marsh deer, the maned wolf and grassland birds like the strange-tailed tyrant.

In 2005, what was to become one of the largest rewilding programs in the Americas was started, with the goal of restoring keystone species that had been extirpated from Iberá through hunting and habitat loss and were extinct in the region, the Province or, in some cases, the country.

As the rewilding program developed, the cultural identity of Iberá began to recover alongside the ecosystems and natural processes, impacting a total population of 100,000 people who surround the park.

Today, Iberá stands as one of the world’s most successful ongoing conservation missions.
