San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance
in Partnership with Journeys With Purpose

The Partnership

As one of the world’s largest and most dynamic conservation organisations, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance brings decades of leadership in global conservation. Its integrated approach uniting wildlife health, field science and education plays a pivotal role in protecting endangered species and restoring some of the planet’s most vital and fragile ecosystems. Sustainable conservation solutions are at the heart of everything SDZWA does. And it starts with the connection it makes with people and wildlife every day.

Guided by its approach to intentional travel, Journeys With Purpose curates distinctive journeys that offer rare, hands-on access to SDZWA’s conservation initiatives. Guests are invited to walk alongside expert practitioners in the field, gaining an authentic, on-the-ground understanding of what it truly means to advance conservation at scale.

Our purpose

Journeys With Purpose is a member of 1% for the Planet. It donates 1% of the price of all these journeys to SDZWA. Therefore, all guests are contributing to the destinations, projects and communities they visit. 1% for the Planet was founded in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia) and Craig Mathews (founder of Blue Ribbon Flies) to encourage businesses to donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes. This global organisation connects businesses and individuals with approved environmental partners to support climate, land, water, wildlife, and pollution initiatives. In 2022, Yvon Chouinard donated 100% of the ownership of Patagonia to trusts dedicated to protecting our environment and climate.

OUR FOCUS - THE IBERÁ NATIONAL PARK:

This extraordinary wetland, the largest in Argentina, is home to 30% of the biodiversity in the country including endangered species such as the pampas and marsh deer, the maned wolf and grassland birds like the strange-tailed tyrant.

In 2005, what was to become one of the largest rewilding programs in the Americas was started, with the goal of restoring keystone species that had been extirpated from Iberá through hunting and habitat loss and were extinct in the region, the Province or, in some cases, the country.

As the rewilding program developed, the cultural identity of Iberá began to recover alongside the ecosystems and natural processes, impacting a total population of 100,000 people who surround the park.

Today, Iberá stands as one of the world’s most successful ongoing conservation missions.
